Stay up-to-date to reduce the risk of cyber crime
Not us, we hear you say. Why would a criminal choose to target our small business when they could be stealing data from large, multi-national corporations? Surely, we’re safe.
Unfortunately, you’d be wrong to assume that hackers only set their sights on billion-dollar household names.

In fact, research from the Federation of Small Businesses shows that seven million incidents of cyber crime are perpetrated against small businesses every single year. Cyber-crime costs around £3,000 on average and it can take around two days for an organisation to get back up and running in the aftermath of an attack.

Take the example of passwords.
A recently released global password risk list revealed that the password, ‘123456’ was found in 23.2 million breached accounts worldwide.
Not only are the most commonly hacked passwords easy to guess, but password re-use means that if one account is breached, then a criminal is going to have a good chance of accessing a victim’s other accounts too.
The trick is to generate hard-to-crack passwords (the National Cyber Security Centre advises a string of three random words) while dissuading staff from re-using these across multiple online accounts.
Indeed, educating employees and making sure they’re fully committed to staying safe online is going to be one of your best assets in the fight against cyber-crime.
Back up your data
Not only should your business protect its own data, but it has a duty and legal responsibility to protect the information it holds about customers and suppliers.
